Eligibility for Agricultural and Food Engineering

Eligibility Criteria for UG and PG Agricultural and Food Engineering

Eligibility varies by programme, university and admission year.

Eligibility Criteria for UG Courses

For B.E. or B.Tech admission, candidates are generally expected to:

  • Complete Class 12 or an equivalent examination from a recognised board.
  • Study the subjects required by the institution.
  • Meet the minimum aggregate.
  • Appear for the accepted entrance examination.
  • Complete counselling and document verification.

Physics and Mathematics are commonly required for an engineering route. Chemistry, Biology, Agriculture, Biotechnology or another approved subject may be accepted under some institutional rules.

Students should not assume that Biology can replace Mathematics in every B.Tech programme. The exact subject requirement must be verified from the current admission notice.

Diploma and Lateral Entry

Diploma programmes may be available after Class 10 or Class 12.

Eligible diploma holders may enter the second year of a degree programme where lateral entry is permitted.

Possible requirements include:

  • Relevant engineering diploma
  • Minimum diploma marks
  • Entrance examination
  • Seat availability
  • Bridge courses

Top Entrance Exams for UG Courses

Entrance examinationLevelCommon purpose
JEE Main National Admission to participating engineering institutions
JEE Advanced National Admission to participating IIT programmes
State engineering entrance examinations State Admission to participating state institutions
CUET UG National Admission to participating university programmes where accepted
ICAR-related admission process National or institutional Admission to participating agricultural programmes where applicable
University entrance tests University Admission to institution-specific programmes
State agricultural university examinations State or university Admission to agricultural and allied programmes

Students must verify whether a particular examination is accepted for the exact Agricultural and Food Engineering programme.

Eligibility Criteria for PG Courses

For M.E. or M.Tech admission, candidates generally require a recognised bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.

Accepted backgrounds may include:

  • Agricultural Engineering
  • Agricultural and Food Engineering
  • Food Engineering
  • Food Process Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Dairy Engineering
  • Biotechnology
  • Another approved discipline

A postgraduate specialisation in Farm Machinery may prefer Agricultural or Mechanical Engineering, while Food Process Engineering may accept Agricultural, Food, Chemical or Dairy Engineering backgrounds.

Institutions may require:

  • Minimum graduation marks
  • GATE score
  • University entrance examination
  • Interview
  • Relevant undergraduate subjects
  • Research proposal for selected programmes

Top Entrance Exams for PG Courses

Entrance examinationLevelCommon use
GATE National M.E./M.Tech admission and related opportunities
ICAR postgraduate admission process National Admission to participating agricultural programmes where applicable
University PG entrance tests University Admission to institution-specific courses
State postgraduate examinations State Admission to participating institutions
Written test and interview Institution Selection for specialised or research programmes

Students should check the accepted GATE paper and degree background before applying.

Academic preparation before joining

Students benefit from revising algebra, trigonometry, basic calculus, mechanics, energy, electricity and introductory computing. These foundations support pump calculations, machine power, water flow, heat transfer and process balances. Interest in agriculture is helpful, but the programme remains an engineering course and requires comfort with numerical work. A student should also be ready for outdoor measurement, workshop practice and food-processing laboratories. Eligibility only confirms that an application can be considered; it does not show whether the learning style matches the student’s interests.

Checking equivalent qualifications

Applicants from different boards, diploma systems or international qualifications should obtain written confirmation of equivalence where required. Subject names can differ even when content is similar. The safe approach is to match the certificate, subjects and marks with the exact programme notice. Category relaxation, domicile benefits and lateral entry are separate conditions and should be documented independently rather than assumed from a general course description.
