Eligibility to appear in JEE Main 2026

NTA prescribed no age limit for appearing in JEE Main 2026. Candidates who passed Class 12 or an equivalent qualifying examination in 2024 or 2025, or who were appearing in 2026, could take the examination irrespective of age. An institution may nevertheless apply its own age or programme-specific admission rule, so exam eligibility and admission eligibility must be checked separately.

Candidates who passed the qualifying examination before 2024 were not eligible for JEE Main 2026 under the specified passing-year condition.

Recognised qualifying examinations

The bulletin recognises the final 10+2 examination of a recognised central or state board, a recognised two-year pre-university examination, NIOS senior secondary with at least five subjects, specified vocational examinations, a recognised three-year diploma, GCE A-level, International Baccalaureate and other examinations recognised as equivalent by the Association of Indian Universities. Candidates educated outside India or through a board not listed by NTA may need an AIU equivalence certificate.

Subject requirements

NTA permits candidates to sit the examination based on the qualifying-year rules, but admission authorities prescribe programme subjects. For B.E./B.Tech admission in the NIT+ system, candidates should verify the current JoSAA business rules concerning Physics, Mathematics, language, one subject from the stated technical/science group and another subject in the qualifying examination. B.Arch and B.Planning have their own subject conditions.

Do not assume that receiving a JEE Main rank proves eligibility for every programme. During counselling, the allotted institute verifies Class 12 subjects, marks, category documents and other conditions.

Class 12 performance condition for admission

The examination bulletin and JoSAA rules distinguish between eligibility to appear and eligibility for admission. NIT+ admission has historically required the prescribed aggregate percentage in Class 12 or placement within the category-wise top 20 percentile of the relevant board, with relaxation for specified categories. Candidates must use the exact 2026 JoSAA rule and their board’s official top-20-percentile list rather than an unofficial calculator.

State code of eligibility

The state code is generally linked to the state where the candidate passed the Class 12 qualifying examination—not necessarily birthplace, residence or permanent address. This matters for Home State and Other State quotas in NIT+ counselling. Special rules may apply to candidates who studied abroad, improved subjects, attended NIOS or have unusual schooling histories; consult the NTA bulletin and JoSAA business rules before selecting the code.

Reservation documents

Reservation benefit is subject to valid documents and the applicable central or state list. For NITs, IIITs and CFTIs, central-list requirements apply. OBC-NCL and EWS certificates must satisfy the prescribed format and validity date. PwD/PwBD candidates should check UDID, disability-certificate, scribe and compensatory-time requirements early.

Practical eligibility audit

Before applying, confirm:

• qualifying examination and passing year;
• required subjects for the intended programme;
• name, date of birth and category consistency across records;
• state code of eligibility;
• Class 12 aggregate or top-20-percentile admission condition;
• category/PwD certificate format and issue date;
• separate JEE Advanced eligibility if targeting IITs.

Eligibility errors often surface only during document verification, when correction may no longer be possible. Treat this audit as seriously as exam preparation.
