JoSAA is a separate registration
Qualifying JEE Main does not automatically register a candidate for seat allocation. Candidates seeking NIT, IIIT, IIEST or other participating GFTI seats must register on the official JoSAA portal, confirm their details and fill programme choices before the deadline.
Choice filling
A “choice” is an institute–academic programme combination. Add every combination you would genuinely accept and arrange them in true preference order. Do not order solely by last year’s cutoff. Consider curriculum, branch flexibility, location, fees, accommodation, accreditation, placement evidence and personal career goals.
Mock allotments are diagnostic. They show what might happen based on choices saved by the stated cut-off time, but are not guaranteed seats. Use them to discover missing choices or poor ordering, not to chase a rumour-driven list.
Seat-allocation actions
After an allotment, candidates generally choose among the responses permitted by the current business rules:
- Freeze: accept the seat and stop seeking a higher preference.
- Float: accept while remaining eligible for a higher preferred institute/programme.
- Slide: accept while seeking a higher preferred programme within the same institute, where applicable.
The exact availability and consequences depend on the round and institute system. Read the current business rules before selecting; the label is a binding admission action, not an informal preference.
Online reporting
Complete seat-acceptance fee payment, upload required documents and respond to verification queries within the deadline. A payment without document completion, or an unanswered query, can cause cancellation. Check the portal frequently until the verification status is resolved.
Common records include the JEE Main scorecard/admit card, Class 10 and 12 certificates, category or PwD certificate where applicable, identity and nationality documents, and state-code support. Use only the current JoSAA checklist and formats.
Withdrawal, exit and reporting
Withdrawal and exit rules vary by round and by IIT versus NIT+ systems. Understand refund deductions and deadlines before acting. After JoSAA, candidates allotted NIT+ seats must follow physical/online institute reporting and any partial-admission-fee requirements published for the cycle.
CSAB special rounds
CSAB may conduct special rounds for vacant NIT+ system seats after JoSAA. CSAB requires separate attention to registration, fees, choice filling and rules. Do not assume a JoSAA choice list automatically carries forward. A candidate holding or surrendering a JoSAA seat must understand the current CSAB consequences before participating.
Building a defensible choice list
Research engineering branches, compare college profiles, examine official seat matrices and historical ranks, and keep a spreadsheet recording each choice and why it is placed there. Include enough realistic and safer options; an extremely short list can leave a qualified candidate without a seat.
