JEE Main Overview
A concise introduction to the examination, its purpose, participating institutes and admission pathway.
What is JEE Main?
The Joint Entrance Examination Main, commonly called JEE Main, is the national entrance examination used for admission to undergraduate engineering, architecture and planning programmes. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the examination on behalf of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education.
JEE Main serves two distinct purposes. First, its ranks are used for admission to B.E. and B.Tech programmes in the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), IIEST Shibpur and other Government Funded Technical Institutions participating in the NIT+ system. Many state universities, private universities and other institutions also accept the score under their own admission rules. Second, JEE Main Paper 1 is the qualifying examination for JEE Advanced, which is the admission route to the IITs.

This guide concentrates primarily on Paper 1 because it is the main pathway to B.Tech programmes, but it also explains Paper 2 wherever the rules differ.
Two-session structure
JEE Main 2026 was organised in January and April sessions. A candidate could appear in either session or both. When a candidate appeared more than once, the best applicable NTA score was used for the final merit list and ranking. The two-session system gives candidates an opportunity to improve their score and reduces the effect of illness, board-examination clashes or one unusually difficult exam day.
An NTA score is a normalised percentile score, not the percentage of marks obtained. Raw marks from different shifts are converted because question papers may vary in difficulty. A 95 percentile does not mean 95% marks; it means the candidate performed at or above approximately 95% of candidates in the relevant normalisation population.
What happens after the examination?
Paper 1 candidates receive subject-wise and total NTA scores. After both sessions, NTA prepares the final result and All India Rank. Candidates seeking NIT, IIIT, IIEST or other GFTI seats must separately register for JoSAA counselling; appearing in JEE Main does not automatically enter a candidate into counselling.
IIT aspirants must satisfy the independently published JEE Advanced eligibility conditions, register for JEE Advanced and qualify that examination. A JEE Main rank alone cannot secure an IIT seat.

JEE Main 2026 schedule at a glance
The original NTA bulletin scheduled Session 1 between 21 and 30 January 2026 and Session 2 between 2 and 9 April 2026. Session 1 applications opened on 31 October 2025 and closed on 27 November 2025. Admit cards were scheduled for release a few days before each allotted examination date. The final Paper 1 ranks were declared on 20 April 2026.

02 JEE Main Eligibility

Eligibility to appear in JEE Main 2026
NTA prescribed no age limit for appearing in JEE Main 2026. Candidates who passed Class 12 or an equivalent qualifying examination in 2024 or 2025, or who were appearing in 2026, could take the examination irrespective of age. 06 JEE Main Admit Card

Admit card and city slip are different documents
NTA first provides examination-city information and later issues the e-admit card. The admit card is provisional and subject to eligibility and successful fee receipt. It states the allotted date, shift, centre and reporting instructions. A candidate cannot choose another shift or appear at another centre.

What the JEE Main result contains
The scorecard reports identifying details and NTA scores for the relevant subjects and total. After the final session, NTA prepares the combined result and rank using the published normalisation and tie-resolution rules. Two different cutoffs
“JEE Main cutoff” can mean two very different things.
The qualifying cutoff is the category-wise NTA-score threshold used to determine eligibility for JEE Advanced, subject to the Advanced examination’s other conditions. It does not guarantee admission to an NIT, IIIT or GFTI.
