JEE Advanced Overview
A concise introduction to the examination, its purpose, participating institutes and admission pathway.
What is JEE Advanced?
JEE Advanced is the competitive examination used for admission to bachelor’s, integrated master’s and bachelor-master dual-degree programmes at the Indian Institutes of Technology. It sits after JEE Main in the admission pathway for most Indian candidates. A JEE Main score alone does not produce an IIT seat: an eligible candidate must register separately for JEE Advanced, write both compulsory papers, satisfy the subject and aggregate qualifying requirements, receive a rank where applicable, and participate in JoSAA counselling.
IIT Roorkee organised the 2026 examination under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board. The examination was conducted on 17 May 2026 in two computer-based papers. Paper 1 ran from 09:00 to 12:00 IST and Paper 2 from 14:30 to 17:30 IST. Attendance in both papers was compulsory for evaluation and ranking. The final answer keys and results were scheduled for 1 June 2026.

This sequence matters because “qualified for JEE Advanced,” “qualified in JEE Advanced,” “received a rank,” and “received an IIT seat” describe four different outcomes. The first concerns eligibility to appear. The second concerns minimum performance conditions. The third places the candidate in one or more rank lists. The fourth depends on rank, category, choices, seat availability and successful verification.
Programmes available through JEE Advanced
The IIT system offers B.Tech and B.S. programmes as well as selected dual-degree and integrated programmes. Programme names do not always mean the same curriculum at every IIT. A candidate should compare curriculum, department, flexibility, branch-change rules, campus environment, cost, scholarships and career pathways instead of judging a choice only by the institute name.
Architecture admission has an extra stage. Candidates seeking B.Arch seats at the IITs that offer the programme must qualify JEE Advanced and then qualify the Architecture Aptitude Test under the published rules. AAT does not generate a separate ranked admission route independent of JEE Advanced.
How to use this guide
Start with eligibility because the Advanced rules include JEE Main performance, age, attempts, Class 12 appearance and earlier IIT admission. Next check the official dates and application process. Official-source rule
The information brochure, schedule, candidate portal, result notices and JoSAA business rules perform different jobs. When two pages appear inconsistent, use the newest dated notice issued by the responsible authority. Screenshots, coaching posts and search snippets are useful discovery aids but are not substitutes for the official document. Keep downloaded copies of the bulletin, registration confirmation, admit card, responses, scorecard, choice list and allotment letters because portal access can change after a stage closes.
JEE Advanced is demanding partly because it tests whether concepts can be connected under time pressure, but the admission process is equally demanding in a different way: a missed registration, an ineligible Class 12 year, absence from one paper, a careless choice order or incomplete reporting can nullify an otherwise strong performance. Preparation must therefore cover both the examination and the process.
