JoSAA is a separate process

A JEE Advanced rank does not automatically enter a candidate into seat allocation. Candidates must register on the official JoSAA portal, complete the required profile and choices, respond to allotments, pay applicable fees and satisfy document verification and reporting rules.

JoSAA coordinates allocation for IITs and the NIT+ system, but eligibility and rank sources differ. IIT choices use JEE Advanced ranks. NIT, IIIT, IIEST and other GFTI choices generally use JEE Main ranks. A candidate eligible for both can place choices from both systems in one ordered list under the business rules.

Choice filling is the central decision

List programmes in genuine preference order. The allocation algorithm considers the highest available choice for which the candidate is eligible under rank, category and seat rules. Probability should influence how many choices are included, not the order of preferred versus less-preferred options.

Research each choice before adding it. Compare curriculum, branch structure, degree type, campus, location, fees, financial aid, academic regulations, branch-change policy and support needs. Avoid assuming that two similarly named programmes at different IITs are identical.

Mock allocations

Mock allocations are based on choices submitted by a stated time and are meant to help candidates understand the possible effect of the list. They are not guaranteed final seats. A candidate can use a mock to identify missing programmes, an accidental order or an overly narrow list, then revise before locking.

Seat-allotment responses

JoSAA commonly uses response concepts such as Freeze, Float and Slide, defined precisely in the current business rules. Freeze generally accepts the allotted programme and stops seeking higher choices. Float retains the seat while allowing consideration of higher choices across institutes and programmes. Slide is typically limited to higher programme choices within the allotted institute. Candidates must read the exact current definitions, eligibility and consequences before selecting.

Documents and verification

Prepare JEE Main and Advanced records, Class 10 date-of-birth proof, Class 12 marksheet and certificate, category or disability certificates, identity, seat-allotment letter, payment proof and any undertaking or medical format required. Names, dates and categories should be consistent. An invalid category certificate can alter eligibility or allocation.

Online verification does not remove later institute reporting. Follow the allotted institute’s admission portal, fee, medical, hostel and physical-reporting instructions after JoSAA action. Keep receipts and acknowledgement records.

Withdrawal and round consequences

Withdrawal, exit, non-payment and failure to report can have different consequences depending on the round and system. IIT withdrawal deadlines may differ from later NIT+ or CSAB activity. Do not infer the rule from a previous year or another candidate’s situation.

Candidates considering another option should compare confirmed offers and refund consequences before surrendering a seat. A speculative future possibility is not equivalent to an allotted seat.

Counselling checklist

1. Register before the official deadline.
2. Verify rank, category and contact details.
3. Add a broad set of genuinely acceptable choices.
4. Order by true preference and save repeatedly.
5. Review mock allocations without treating them as promises.
6. Lock or confirm choices under the published process.
7. Check every round even when no seat is allotted initially.
8. Respond, pay and upload documents within the round deadline.
9. Resolve verification queries promptly.
10. Complete institute reporting after allocation.

Use the official JoSAA website for the schedule, business rules, seat matrix and rank data. Third-party predictors can support exploration but cannot allocate or protect a seat.
