Two compulsory papers
JEE Advanced 2026 consisted of Paper 1 and Paper 2, each lasting three hours. Both contained Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics sections and both were conducted as computer-based tests. Candidates had to appear in both papers. The morning paper ran from 09:00 to 12:00 and the afternoon paper from 14:30 to 17:30 on 17 May 2026.
Unlike an examination with a permanently fixed public blueprint, JEE Advanced can vary the number of questions, response formats, partial marking and negative marking from year to year and between sections. The instructions displayed in the question paper are therefore part of the test. Candidates should not apply a previous paper’s marking rule to the current paper without reading the on-screen instructions.

Common question formats
Previous Advanced papers have used single-correct, multiple-correct, numerical-value, matching and comprehension-linked formats. Their presence in an older paper does not guarantee the same mix in 2026, but practising varied response types develops the habits the examination rewards.
Multiple-correct questions require special discipline. Selecting one valid statement may receive partial credit under some schemes, while selecting an incorrect option can trigger negative marks. Numerical questions demand attention to rounding, permitted precision and the input interface. Matching questions require candidates to distinguish a fully correct mapping from a partially understood one.
Paper-level time strategy
Treat each paper as an independent three-hour decision problem. Begin with a rapid scan to identify accessible questions, but do not spend so long classifying that solving time disappears. Use three passes: first collect high-confidence marks, then attempt medium-complexity problems, and finally review difficult or uncertain items under the exact negative-marking rule.
Subject order is personal. A candidate who normally starts with Chemistry should validate that choice through full mock papers rather than habit alone. The goal is not equal time for every subject; it is the best total and subject-wise performance while clearing the published minimum marks in each subject.
Interface discipline
Computer-based practice should include navigation, marking for review, saving answers, numerical entry and switching sections. A response believed to be selected is useful only if the system records it. Read the colour legend and status indicators in the official mock interface. Avoid keyboard shortcuts or unauthorised actions at the centre.
During review, distinguish unanswered, answered, marked-for-review and answered-and-marked statuses as defined by the interface. Do not assume that “marked for review” always means the response is ignored; follow the displayed rule.
The break between papers
The interval is for recovery, not post-mortem analysis. Extended discussion of Paper 1 can create anxiety without changing its score. Eat familiar food, hydrate, use the permitted facilities, recheck reporting time and return according to centre instructions. Paper 2 can materially change the final outcome, so emotional recovery is a competitive skill.
Pattern-based preparation
Complete previous papers in the original two-paper daily format. Analyse marks lost through concept gaps, interpretation, calculation, response-format errors and poor selection. A candidate who solves hard problems but repeatedly misses instructions has a pattern problem, not merely a knowledge problem.
Use the official 2026 question-paper instructions as final. Any coaching “expected pattern” remains a preparation hypothesis until the examination authority displays the actual scheme.
