Eligibility is a five-gate test

For Indian nationals and OCI/PIO candidates treated at par with Indian nationals, eligibility is not determined by a single cutoff. The candidate must simultaneously satisfy the five criteria in the official brochure. Passing four gates does not compensate for failing the fifth.

Criterion 1: JEE Main shortlist

The top 2,50,000 figure is not a single open-category cutoff. Candidates are shortlisted across categories according to the Advanced rules, and the total can marginally exceed the stated number because of tied ranks or scores. A candidate should rely on the JEE Main result’s eligibility indication and the Advanced registration portal rather than estimating qualification from an unofficial percentile table.

Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO candidates choosing the foreign-national treatment follow separate registration and eligibility provisions. Eligible foreign candidates are generally outside the 2,50,000 Indian shortlist and are not automatically entitled to Indian reservation benefits. Citizenship and OCI/PIO classifications are legally significant; applicants must read the dedicated official section rather than choosing a route for perceived cutoff advantage.

Criterion 2: age

For 2026, the general birth-date condition was on or after 1 October 2001. SC, ST and PwD candidates received the specified five-year relaxation, producing the corresponding relaxed date in the brochure. Date of birth must match the accepted certificate. A mismatch among JEE Main, board and identity documents should be addressed through the authorised process instead of silently entering a different date.

Criterion 3: attempts

A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced no more than twice in two consecutive years. The limit concerns appearances in JEE Advanced, not the number of JEE Main sessions. Writing January and April JEE Main in the same year does not consume two Advanced attempts. Conversely, registering for a third Advanced year is not made valid by a high JEE Main score.

Criterion 4: Class 12 appearance

The normal rule required the candidate’s first appearance in Class 12 or equivalent to be in 2025 or 2026, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. “Appearance” is linked to the board’s declaration of the result for that academic year, not merely the date on which an individual candidate received a marksheet. The brochure contains a narrowly defined provision for boards whose 2023–24 results were declared on or after the stated June 2024 date; affected candidates must check the exact wording and evidence.

Improvement examinations do not automatically reset the first-appearance year. A candidate cannot convert an older first appearance into a new eligible year simply by retaking subjects. Board-specific result timing, withheld results and equivalent examinations require careful documentary analysis.

Criterion 5: earlier IIT admission

A candidate generally becomes ineligible if previously admitted to an IIT programme covered by the relevant JoSAA business rules, even if the candidate later discontinued, or if an IIT seat was accepted through online or reporting-centre action in the disqualifying circumstances. The rules preserve eligibility in certain cases, such as specified non-reporting, withdrawal before the final IIT round, cancellation before the final round, or first admission to an IIT preparatory course in the preceding year, provided every other criterion is satisfied.

This is one of the most misunderstood conditions. “I did not attend classes” is not necessarily equivalent to “I was never admitted.” Candidates with prior IIT allocation must map the exact allotment, acceptance, reporting, withdrawal and cancellation timeline against the official clause.

Exam eligibility versus admission eligibility

Permission to appear and eligibility to join an IIT programme are separate. Admission also requires Class 12 performance under the applicable aggregate-percentage or category-wise top-20-percentile route, the required subject combination, successful qualification in JEE Advanced and compliance with JoSAA and institute rules. B.Arch applicants additionally need AAT qualification.

Final eligibility audit

Before paying the registration fee, answer these questions with documents rather than memory:

1. Does the JEE Main result place you in the eligible shortlist and category?
2. Does the certificate date of birth satisfy the exact 2026 criterion?
3. How many times have you actually appeared in JEE Advanced, and in which years?
4. When did your board first declare your Class 12 or equivalent result?
5. Were Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics compulsory subjects?
6. Have you ever accepted, reported for, withdrawn from or had admission cancelled at an IIT?
7. Can you meet the separate Class 12 and programme conditions used at admission?

If any answer depends on an exception, preserve the relevant notice and seek clarification from the official helpdesk before the deadline. Eligibility cannot safely be inferred from a third-party “yes/no” calculator.
