Application process

JEE Main applications are submitted online through the official NTA examination portal. Never use an agent’s email, mobile number or password. The candidate must retain control of the account because the same credentials are needed for the second session, admit card, response sheet and result.

Step 1: Registration

Create the account using the permitted identity route, enter personal details exactly as supported by official records, create a password and save the system-generated application number. The 2026 bulletin used one application number across both sessions. Submitting multiple application forms could be treated as an unfair-means case and lead to cancellation.

Step 2: Complete the form

Select the paper, question-paper medium and examination cities; enter address, category and education details; and upload the required files. Review every entry before final submission. The chosen language and many identity fields may not be freely editable later.

The 2026 requirements included a live photograph and uploaded photograph, signature, Class 10 certificate/marksheet, identity proof in applicable non-Aadhaar/non-DigiLocker cases, and disability/UDID certificate where relevant. NTA prescribed file types and size ranges in the bulletin. Use clear, uncropped files and keep the originals.

Step 3: Pay and verify

Pay through an enabled online method. Application fees vary by paper combination, category, gender and whether the examination centre is in India or abroad. Payment-gateway charges and GST may apply in addition. The application is considered complete only when the confirmation page is generated.

For one paper at an Indian centre, the 2026 bulletin listed ₹1,000 for a general male candidate, ₹900 for a Gen-EWS/OBC-NCL male candidate, ₹800 for women in those groups, and ₹500 for SC/ST/PwD/PwBD candidates and third-gender candidates. Combined-paper and overseas-centre fees were higher. These figures are year-specific.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Creating a second application instead of using the original number for Session 2.
• Selecting a category without a valid admission-stage certificate.
• Confusing present/permanent address with state code of eligibility.
• Uploading another person’s photograph or an unreadable signature.
• Choosing the wrong paper or language.
• Assuming a debited bank account means successful submission.
• Waiting until the final hour, when payment reconciliation may not finish.

Correction window

NTA normally opens a limited correction facility through a public notice. Only specified fields can be changed and an additional fee may apply. Corrections sent by email, post, messaging apps or visits to an office are not a substitute for the authorised online facility.

Records to preserve

Download the confirmation page, fee receipt, final submitted form and every correction acknowledgement. Store hard and soft copies with the admit card, response sheet and scorecard. These records may be required during JoSAA counselling or while resolving a discrepancy.
