Two different cutoffs
“JEE Main cutoff” can mean two very different things.
The qualifying cutoff is the category-wise NTA-score threshold used to determine eligibility for JEE Advanced, subject to the Advanced examination’s other conditions. It does not guarantee admission to an NIT, IIIT or GFTI.
The admission cutoff is usually the opening or closing rank for a particular institute, programme, category, quota, gender pool and counselling round. JoSAA publishes these ranks after allocation rounds.
Why one college has many closing ranks
A programme may have different ranks for Open, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST and PwD categories; Home State and Other State quotas; gender-neutral and female-only pools; and different rounds. Category-rank and common-rank-list values must not be mixed.
For example, “Computer Science at an NIT” is not one cutoff. The correct comparison requires the exact institute, academic programme, seat type, quota, gender pool, category and round.
How to use previous closing ranks
Historical ranks are planning evidence, not promises. Seat matrices, candidate preferences, programme names and category distribution change. Build three groups:
- ambitious choices, where the candidate’s rank is somewhat weaker than recent closing ranks;
- realistic choices, where it is near the recent range;
- safer choices, where it is comfortably stronger than recent closing ranks.
Candidates should still place choices in their true order of preference. JoSAA attempts to allot the highest available choice; adding an ambitious option above a realistic option does not reduce the chance of receiving the realistic option if the algorithm reaches it.
Factors beyond rank
Before treating any choice as eligible, verify Class 12 conditions, state code, category certificate, programme restrictions and institute-specific requirements. Architecture and planning routes may have distinct conditions. Some branches also carry medical or physical requirements described by the institute.
