Data Science Course Duration
| Programme | Typical duration | Academic arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| Diploma after Class 10 | 3 years | Usually six semesters |
| BE/BTech | 4 years | Usually eight semesters |
| BE/BTech lateral entry | 3 years after direct second-year entry | Usually six remaining semesters |
| ME/MTech | 2 years | Usually four semesters |
| PhD | Commonly 3–6 years or under current regulations | Coursework, research reviews and thesis |
| Certificate | Weeks to one year or more | Topic-focused learning |
Typical four-year progression
The first stage establishes calculus, linear algebra, probability, statistics, programming and professional communication. An engineering route may also include common Physics and engineering subjects, while a BSc route may begin statistical study earlier.
The second year introduces data structures, digital logic, computer organisation, object-oriented programming, discrete Mathematics, database systems and operating systems. Laboratory exercises become more substantial.
The middle stage normally includes SQL, statistical inference, data cleaning, visualisation, machine learning, data engineering and electives. Students begin internships, team projects and role-specific preparation.
The final stage offers advanced electives, project work, seminars and often an internship. Options may cover artificial intelligence, natural language processing, computer vision, big data, cloud analytics, time series or business intelligence.
Academic workload
A programme includes lectures, tutorials, coding and analytics laboratories, assignments, internal assessments, examinations and projects. Students should expect substantial independent practice. Programming and statistics cannot be mastered only by reading notes.
Internship duration
An internship may range from a few weeks to an entire semester according to the university. Suitable environments include analytics teams, banks, consulting firms, startups, public-data projects, research laboratories and technology departments in many industries.
Students should favour internships that provide defined technical work, supervision and feedback. A certificate without actual contribution has limited value in an interview.
Major project
The final project allows students to integrate problem framing, data collection, cleaning, modelling, evaluation, communication and documentation. Examples include demand forecasting, public-health analysis, customer segmentation, anomaly detection, a recommendation baseline or a governed data pipeline.
The scope should match time and resources. A smaller system that works reliably and has measured results is preferable to an unrealistic product assembled from copied modules.
