Foundry and Forge Technology Course Duration
| Programme | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Diploma in Foundry and Forge Technology | 3 years after Class 10 |
| BE/BTech Foundry and Forge Technology | 4 years |
| BE/BTech lateral entry | Usually 3 years after direct second-year admission |
| ME/MTech in a related Foundry, Manufacturing or Metallurgy specialisation | 2 years or four semesters |
| PhD | Commonly 3–6 years under regulations |
| Short certificate | A few weeks to several months |
Undergraduate progression
The first year builds Mathematics, Physics, drawing, workshop and engineering fundamentals. Later study introduces mechanics, materials, metallurgy, manufacturing, casting, forging, heat treatment, quality and production. A broad degree may spread these topics across several semesters.
Postgraduate progression
Postgraduate progression depends on the specialisation. Foundry study may cover advanced solidification, mould materials and casting simulation; forge study may cover plasticity, die design and metal-flow simulation. The final year generally emphasises seminar and dissertation.
Laboratory workload
Students combine theory with shop practice, testing and simulation. They may prepare moulding sand, make patterns and cores, melt small heats under supervision, examine microstructures, inspect castings or study forging loads. Reports should state materials, conditions, safety precautions and results.
Internship
Suitable internships exist in foundries, forge shops, automotive suppliers, steel plants, tool rooms, testing laboratories and equipment manufacturers. Students should receive safety induction before entering melting, pouring, heat-treatment or press areas.
Dissertation
Postgraduate research may address alloy treatment, mould behaviour, solidification, porosity, gating yield, die life, metal flow, forging load, heat treatment, defect prediction or sustainability. A dissertation needs a clear problem, literature review, method, results and limitations.
