Industrial Engineering Course Duration

ProgrammeTypical duration
Diploma in Industrial Engineering3 years after Class 10
BE/BTech Industrial Engineering4 years
BE/BTech lateral entryUsually 3 years after direct second-year admission
ME/MTech in a related Industrial, Production or Manufacturing specialisation2 years or four semesters
PhDCommonly 3–6 years under regulations
Short certificateA few weeks to several months

Undergraduate progression

The first year builds Mathematics, Physics, drawing, workshop and engineering fundamentals. Later study introduces mechanics, materials, manufacturing, operations research, quality, planning, ergonomics and automation.

Postgraduate progression

Postgraduate progression depends on the specialisation. Study may cover advanced manufacturing, production systems, analytics, quality, logistics or automation. The final year generally emphasises seminar and dissertation.

Laboratory workload

Students combine theory with shop practice, measurement and simulation. They may study machining, work methods, layouts, quality, schedules, inventory or automation. Reports should state data, assumptions, safety precautions and results.

Internship

Suitable internships exist in factories, automotive suppliers, logistics firms, quality laboratories, warehouses and equipment manufacturers. Students should receive safety induction before entering production areas.

Dissertation

Postgraduate research may address scheduling, quality, ergonomics, facility layout, supply chains, maintenance, simulation, automation or sustainability. A dissertation needs a clear problem, method, results and limitations.
