Compare three-year diploma, four-year undergraduate, two-year postgraduate, certificate and doctoral timelines.
Marine Engineering Course Duration
| Programme | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Skill certificate | Weeks to twelve months |
| Engineering diploma | Three years |
| BE/BTech Marine Engineering | Four years |
| Lateral-entry BTech | Commonly three remaining years |
| ME/MTech Marine Engineering | Two years |
| PhD | Commonly three years or more |
Four-year progression
The first year covers Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, computing, graphics and workshops. The second year develops mechanics, materials, thermodynamics, marine processes and measurement.
The third year covers engine maintenance, forming, joining, engine-room automation, CAD/CAM, quality, automation and maintenance and engine-room planning. The final year includes electives, internship and major project.
Laboratory workload
Students perform engine maintenance, propulsion components, forming, ship welding, marine measurement, engine-room automation and automation work. Reports should include parameters, measurements, defects and safety.
Internship
Internships may occur in maritime, aerospace, machine-tool, fabrication, electronics, foundry, energy or quality organisations. Defined technical work and supervision matter more than the company name.
Major project
Projects can develop a heat-recovery system, optimise fuel use, analyse machinery faults, automate condition monitoring or improve bilge and ballast operations. Scope should match available machines, materials and time.
