IIT Kanpur admission 2026
IIT Kanpur Admission and Application Process 2026
Admission to IIT Kanpur is programme-specific and primarily entrance based. Applicants should begin by selecting the programme and checking the current eligibility notice on the institute or authorised examination portal. For BTech and four-year BS programmes, candidates ordinarily complete Class 12 with the required science subjects, qualify JEE Main to become eligible for JEE Advanced, secure a valid JEE Advanced rank and participate in JoSAA counselling. IIT Kanpur does not provide a management-quota route for these programmes.
During JoSAA counselling, candidates register online, enter and lock their institute-programme preferences, and respond to seat-allotment rounds. A candidate allotted IIT Kanpur must accept the seat, upload or present the required documents, pay the applicable seat-acceptance amount and complete institute reporting within the stated schedule. Category, preparatory-course and document requirements are governed by the current JoSAA and JEE Advanced rules.
MTech applicants generally require a relevant qualifying degree and a valid GATE score. They must also complete IIT Kanpur’s application and, where applicable, register on COAP to view and accept offers. MSc applicants use JAM followed by the applicable admission process. MDes applicants ordinarily use CEED. MBA applicants use CAT and then follow the Department of Management Sciences selection stages. Research programmes may use GATE, JRF, NET or another accepted qualification together with department-level shortlisting, a written test and/or interview.
The online application normally asks for personal details, academic history, entrance-examination information, category details and programme preferences. Applicants upload photographs, signatures, marksheets, degree certificates where applicable, scorecards and supporting category or disability documents. They should ensure that names, dates and marks agree across documents. Any discrepancy can delay verification.
Application fees depend on the programme and applicant category. Shiksha displays an MBA application fee of INR 1,600 for General applicants and INR 800 for SC, ST, EWS and DAP applicants; it displays PhD application fees of INR 500 and INR 250 respectively. These amounts are time-sensitive and must be confirmed before payment.
After selection, candidates complete document verification, pay institute fees and follow registration and hostel instructions. Fee-remission or scholarship eligibility is assessed separately and may require income or category documents. Because schedules and requirements can change, candidates should rely on the latest official notice rather than an earlier summary.
