Cyber Security Career Options

Security operations centre analyst

SOC analysts monitor alerts, review logs, investigate suspicious activity and escalate incidents. Entry-level analysts work through defined procedures while building knowledge of systems, networks and attacker behaviour. Shift work is common in round-the-clock operations.

Junior cyber security analyst

Junior analysts assist with vulnerability management, control reviews, dashboards, documentation and incident triage. They need careful reasoning and must distinguish evidence from assumption.

Network security engineer

Network security engineers work with segmentation, firewalls, secure connectivity, access rules and monitoring. Freshers may begin in operations or support before receiving responsibility for major design changes.

Application security analyst

Application security professionals help development teams identify and prevent software weaknesses. They review design, code, dependencies and test results. Strong programming and software-development knowledge are essential.

Cloud security engineer

Cloud security engineers work with identity, network controls, encryption, logging, configuration and workload protection. Junior candidates need cloud foundations, Linux, networking and automation.

Identity and access management analyst

IAM analysts support user lifecycle, authentication, privileges, access reviews and audit evidence. The role combines technology with business-process understanding.

Incident response analyst

Incident responders investigate confirmed or suspected events, contain damage, support recovery and preserve evidence. Senior responders develop judgement through extensive operational experience.

Digital forensics analyst

Forensics professionals acquire and analyse digital evidence using controlled, documented methods. Legal authority, evidence integrity and chain of custody are critical.

Vulnerability management analyst

These analysts identify known weaknesses, validate exposure, prioritise remediation and track closure. Scanning must be authorised and interpreted in the context of assets and risk.

Penetration testing pathway

Authorised testers assess agreed systems within a written scope and report weaknesses responsibly. This is not permission to attack public systems. Entry requires strong networking, operating-system, web and reporting fundamentals.

Governance, risk and compliance analyst

GRC analysts work with policies, control frameworks, risk registers, audits, vendor assurance and regulatory obligations. They need clear writing, evidence handling and business understanding.

Security engineer

Security engineers design, implement and operate protective systems. The role can involve endpoint, email, data, network, cloud or detection engineering. Breadth grows with experience.

Security consultant

Consultants assess risks and recommend improvements for clients. Independent or senior consulting requires technical credibility, communication ability and understanding of legal and business constraints.

Security architect

Security architects define security patterns, requirements and integration across complex systems. It is a senior role reached after years of engineering and risk responsibility, not a normal fresher position.

Government opportunities

Eligible candidates can apply for technical positions in government IT, public-sector organisations, railways, defence, education and other departments. Every notification specifies accepted qualifications and examination rules.

Progression from diploma

Diploma holders may start in technician, cabling, field support, help-desk or junior operations roles. They can improve progression through experience, certifications and lateral-entry degree education where eligible.

Placement preparation

Students should practise explaining packet flow, subnetting, routing decisions, DNS, DHCP and troubleshooting. A small functioning laboratory is valuable. Interviews may assess both concepts and scenario-based reasoning.
