Compare three-year diploma, four-year undergraduate, two-year postgraduate, certificate and doctoral timelines.
Industrial Design Course Duration
| Programme | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Design diploma | Commonly 1–3 years, depending on institute |
| BDes Industrial Design | 4 years or eight semesters |
| Related BFA/BSc route | Commonly 3–4 years under programme rules |
| MDes Industrial Design | 2 years or four semesters |
| PhD | Commonly 3–6 years under regulations |
| Short certificate | A few weeks to several months |
Undergraduate progression
The first year builds observation, drawing, form, colour, materials, model-making and design foundations. Later study introduces ergonomics, research, product semantics, CAD, prototyping, manufacturing, sustainability, systems and studio projects. The final year commonly includes internship and graduation project.
Postgraduate progression
Postgraduate progression emphasises design methodology, human factors, materials, manufacturing, visual thinking, advanced studios, electives and a major graduation project.
Laboratory workload
Students combine theory with studio work and physical making. They sketch, build mock-ups, work with materials, create CAD models, test users and document decisions. Workshop safety and honest process records are essential.
Internship
Suitable internships exist in design consultancies, consumer-product firms, furniture, mobility, appliances, medical products, packaging, social-design organisations and manufacturing companies.
Dissertation
Postgraduate research may address inclusive products, sustainable materials, mobility, healthcare, interaction, craft-industry links, circular systems or design methods. A dissertation needs a clear question, research, process, testing and limitations.
