Plastics Engineering Course Duration

The regular BTech or BE Plastics Engineering programme lasts four years and is divided into eight semesters. Diploma study generally lasts three years, while MTech normally lasts two years.

Duration table

ProgrammeTypical duration
Diploma Plastics EngineeringThree years
BTech or BE Plastics EngineeringFour years
Lateral-entry BTechThree years after entry
Integrated BTech-MTechFive years where offered
MTech or METwo years
PhDCommonly three to six years or more

First year

Students usually study Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, computing, graphics, mechanics, electrical fundamentals and communication. Some institutions introduce chemical processes in the first year. Course application: plastics processing.

Second year

Material balances, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, mechanical operations and laboratory courses establish the chemical-engineering core.

Third year

Students study heat transfer, mass transfer, reaction engineering, process control, equipment and safety. Industrial training may occur during the summer. Course application: plastics processing.

Fourth year

Plant design, economics, simulation, electives and the final-year project integrate learning. Students may specialise in petroleum, biochemical, energy, environment or materials subjects. Course application: plastics processing.

Internship duration

Training can range from a few weeks to a full semester. Meaningful internships include defined process, laboratory, design, safety or data work with supervision. Course application: plastics processing.

Project duration

Major projects commonly run for one or two semesters. Students define a problem, review literature, build a method, analyse results and defend conclusions. Course application: plastics processing.

Academic completion

Backlogs, approved breaks or incomplete projects can extend the duration. Attendance, safety and laboratory rules apply. Lateral-entry students may need bridge courses. Course application: plastics processing.
