Printing Technology Course Duration

The regular BTech or BE Printing Technology programme lasts four years and is divided into eight semesters. Diploma study generally lasts three years, while MTech normally lasts two years.

Duration table

ProgrammeTypical duration
Diploma Printing TechnologyThree years
BTech or BE Printing TechnologyFour years
Lateral-entry BTechThree years after entry
Integrated BTech-MTechFive years where offered
MTech or METwo years
PhDCommonly three to six years or more

First year

Students usually study Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, computing, graphics, mechanics, electrical fundamentals and communication. Some institutions introduce print production workflowes in the first year.

Second year

material and waste accounting, colour science, ink rheology and press systems, mechanical operations and laboratory courses establish the ink and coating-engineering core.

Third year

Students study ink drying and curing, ink transfer and adhesion, print production engineering, press control, equipment and safety. Industrial training may occur during the summer.

Fourth year

printing-facility design, economics, simulation, electives and the final-year project integrate learning. Students may specialise in publishing, sustainable ink, energy, environment or materials subjects.

Internship duration

Training can range from a few weeks to a full semester. Meaningful internships include defined process, laboratory, design, safety or data work with supervision. Course application: print production and colour control.

Project duration

Major projects commonly run for one or two semesters. Students define a problem, review literature, build a method, analyse results and defend conclusions. Course application: print production and colour control.

Academic completion

Backlogs, approved breaks or incomplete projects can extend the duration. Attendance, safety and laboratory rules apply. Lateral-entry students may need bridge courses. Course application: print production and colour control.
