Civil Engineering Career Options

Graduates can work in construction, consulting, government, real estate, infrastructure, laboratories and utilities. Senior and specialist roles require experience.

Civil engineer

The general title can cover design, site, project or maintenance duties. Responsibilities depend on the employer and project.

Site engineer

Site engineers supervise work, check drawings, monitor quality, measure progress and coordinate resources. They often begin their careers on construction sites.

Structural engineer

Structural engineers analyse and design buildings, bridges and industrial structures. Advanced design roles frequently prefer MTech Structural Engineering and relevant experience.

Geotechnical engineer

Geotechnical engineers plan investigations, interpret soil and design foundations, slopes and retaining systems. Field and postgraduate expertise are valuable.

Transportation engineer

Transportation professionals work on roads, traffic, pavements, transit, rail or airports. They use surveys, modelling and design standards.

Highway engineer
