Civil Engineering Course Duration
The regular BTech or BE Civil Engineering programme lasts four years and is divided into eight semesters. Diploma study normally lasts three years, and MTech usually lasts two years.

First year
The first year covers Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, mechanics, graphics, computing, electrical fundamentals, workshop and communication. Some universities introduce surveying and materials.
Second year
Students study strength of materials, surveying, fluid mechanics, construction materials, structural analysis, geology and soil mechanics.
Third year
Core subjects include reinforced concrete, steel, geotechnical, transportation, environmental and water-resources engineering. Laboratories and design exercises become more advanced.
Fourth year
Students complete electives, estimation, construction management, internship and a major project. Advanced design and software integration are common.
Survey camp
Some programmes include a survey camp in which students conduct field measurements, mapping and setting-out exercises over several days.
Internship
Industrial training can last several weeks or a semester. Good internships involve site, design, planning, quality, surveying or laboratory tasks.
Final-year project
Projects may be experimental, analytical, design-based or field-based. Students should choose achievable objectives and reliable data.
Academic completion
Backlogs or incomplete project work can extend duration. Attendance and field safety rules apply. Lateral-entry students may have bridge courses.
