Petroleum Engineering Course Duration

The regular BTech or BE Petroleum Engineering programme lasts four years and is divided into eight semesters. Diploma study generally lasts three years, while MTech normally lasts two years.

Duration table

First year

Students usually study Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, computing, graphics, mechanics, electrical fundamentals and communication. Some institutions introduce chemical processes in the first year. Course application: petroleum production.

Second year

Material balances, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, mechanical operations and laboratory courses establish the chemical-engineering core.

Third year

Students study heat transfer, mass transfer, reaction engineering, process control, equipment and safety. Industrial training may occur during the summer. Course application: petroleum production.

Fourth year

Plant design, economics, simulation, electives and the final-year project integrate learning. Students may specialise in petroleum, biochemical, energy, environment or materials subjects. Course application: petroleum production.

Internship duration

Training can range from a few weeks to a full semester. Meaningful internships include defined process, laboratory, design, safety or data work with supervision. Course application: petroleum production.

Project duration

Major projects commonly run for one or two semesters. Students define a problem, review literature, build a method, analyse results and defend conclusions. Course application: petroleum production.

Academic completion
