GATE 2026 Eligibility

Eligibility to appear is different from eligibility for admission

GATE's examination eligibility is broader than the eligibility for an individual postgraduate engineering programme. The official rules cover candidates in the third year or higher of an eligible undergraduate degree, as well as holders of recognised qualifications in the specified fields. The detailed degree table matters, particularly for integrated programmes, professional qualifications and qualifications completed outside India. There is no general age limit for appearing in GATE 2026.

A third-year student may therefore be eligible to take the examination before being ready to enrol in a postgraduate degree. Admission normally requires the qualifying degree and the admitting institution's other conditions to be completed within its stated timetable. The ability to sit the test should not be described as permission to enter an M.Tech programme without finishing the required undergraduate qualification.

Suppose a student takes GATE while studying the sixth semester and obtains a useful score. The score can be retained for an eligible future application within its validity, but the student must still complete the degree and meet the future programme's requirements. Conversely, a graduate who meets the examination eligibility may still lack a prerequisite branch or subject demanded by a specific department.

Professional and overseas qualifications need document-level checking. The relevant issue is the qualification's recognised status and its treatment under the published eligibility table, not whether its title sounds similar to B.Tech. Where equivalence is needed, obtain the required institutional evidence. An applicant should not independently assign equivalence merely because two courses have comparable durations or contain some common engineering subjects.
