Building a preparation plan despite incomplete numerical details

Separate knowledge preparation from interface preparation. Knowledge work can begin with the relevant undergraduate foundations and the intended programme's prerequisites. Interface work, including exact section timers and answer rules, should be finalised once the candidate receives confirmed instructions. This avoids losing useful study time while also avoiding false precision.

Create a topic inventory from the official syllabus if supplied. Until then, label a provisional inventory as personal preparation, not official coverage. For each topic, note whether the applicant can explain the concept, solve a standard problem and handle a changed assumption. These are progressively stronger tests of understanding.

An applicant returning after several years of employment may remember practical applications while forgetting formal derivations. A recent graduate may have the opposite profile: strong recall but limited experience interpreting imperfect data or ambiguous engineering conditions. The preparation plan should address the actual gap rather than assume both applicants need identical revision.

The following technical examples are original foundation exercises. They illustrate useful postgraduate readiness skills across disciplines and should be used selectively. Their inclusion does not mean that every applicant must study every branch, or that each example belongs to an officially confirmed GAT PG syllabus.
