Applied Mechanics Entrance Exams

JEE Main: Used for admission to participating undergraduate engineering institutions. The exact programme may be available under a related mechanics title.

JEE Advanced: Used for undergraduate admission to IITs. Programmes offered through Applied Mechanics departments may be listed separately in the JoSAA seat matrix.

State engineering entrance tests: State universities and colleges may admit students through state-level examinations or counselling.

University entrance examinations: Private universities may conduct their own tests or accept national examination scores.

GATE: The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is commonly used for M.Tech, ME and some research admissions. Applicants must choose a GATE paper accepted by the target programme.

Institutional written tests and interviews: MS and PhD applicants may face subject tests, research-aptitude assessments and technical interviews.

Which GATE Paper Is Required?

The accepted GATE paper depends on the programme. Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Sciences or another relevant paper may be accepted.

Candidates should not assume that every Applied Mechanics programme accepts the same GATE paper. The official admission brochure may list specific qualifying degrees and GATE disciplines.

Applied Mechanics Entrance Preparation

For undergraduate admission, candidates should strengthen:

  • Physics;
  • Chemistry;
  • Mathematics;
  • numerical accuracy;
  • problem-solving speed; and
  • examination strategy.

For postgraduate admission, preparation may cover:

  • engineering mathematics;
  • engineering mechanics;
  • strength of materials;
  • fluid mechanics;
  • thermodynamics;
  • theory of machines;
  • mechanical vibration;
  • machine design;
  • numerical methods; and
  • branch-specific topics.

MS and PhD applicants should also review their undergraduate project, core mechanics concepts and intended research area.
