Compare three-year diploma, four-year undergraduate, two-year postgraduate, certificate and doctoral timelines.
Bioengineering Course Duration
| Programme | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Certificate | A few weeks to one year |
| Diploma | Approximately one to three years |
| BTech Bioengineering | Four years |
| BTech Biosciences and Bioengineering | Four years |
| Lateral-entry BTech | Usually three years |
| Integrated BTech–MTech | Five years |
| MTech Bioengineering | Two years |
| MSc Biosciences and Bioengineering | Two years |
| PhD Bioengineering | Commonly three to six years or more |
BTech course structure
A four-year BTech usually contains eight semesters.
The first year introduces Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Programming and basic Engineering.
The second year develops foundations in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Electronics, Materials, Mechanics and Statistics.
The third year may cover Biomaterials, Biomechanics, Biosensors, Instrumentation, Bioprocessing and Bioinformatics.
The fourth year generally includes advanced electives, internship, seminar, research methods and a major project.
Integrated-course structure
An integrated BTech–MTech normally lasts five years. The final part may include advanced electives, research and dissertation work.
Students should check whether separate degrees are awarded and whether an exit option exists.
MTech structure
An MTech usually combines advanced coursework with laboratory or computational projects. A dissertation forms an important part of the programme.
MSc structure
An MSc may provide stronger biological-science and research training. It may contain laboratory, computational and interdisciplinary Bioengineering subjects.
PhD duration
A PhD may require several years because it includes coursework, original research, publications, thesis preparation and examination.
