Bioengineering Eligibility

Eligibility requirements vary because some programmes follow the conventional engineering route, while others accept Biology-based combinations.

Candidates must check the latest official admission brochure of the institution.

BTech Bioengineering eligibility

Typical requirements may include:

  • Passing Class 12 or an equivalent examination from a recognised board
  • Studying Physics and Chemistry
  • Studying Mathematics, Biology or both, as specified by the institution
  • Securing the required aggregate marks
  • Obtaining a valid entrance score
  • Participating in counselling or institutional selection

The required aggregate may range from approximately 45% to 65% or more. Relaxation may be available for eligible reserved categories.

Eligibility for PCM students

PCM students are eligible for many Bioengineering programmes. Their Mathematics background can help with:

  • Engineering calculations
  • Computer Programming
  • Data Analysis
  • Biomechanics
  • Process Engineering
  • Mathematical modelling
  • Signal Processing

PCM students may need additional effort in introductory Biology, Physiology, Biochemistry and Genetics.

Eligibility for PCB students

Selected universities accept PCB students for Bioengineering. These programmes may be more strongly connected to Biotechnology, health science or biological research.

PCB applicants should confirm:

  • Whether Mathematics is mandatory
  • Whether a bridge Mathematics course is provided
  • Which entrance-examination paper is required
  • Whether the course is a BTech
  • Whether future engineering programmes accept their background
  • Whether particular government vacancies require Mathematics

PCB eligibility at one college does not mean that all Bioengineering colleges follow the same rule.

Eligibility for PCMB students

PCMB students may satisfy a wider range of programme requirements. However, they must still meet entrance, marks and counselling conditions.

BTech Biosciences and Bioengineering eligibility

Institutions using the IIT admission process generally require JEE Main, JEE Advanced and JoSAA counselling according to current rules.

Students must satisfy the general IIT admission conditions for the relevant year.

BTech Biotechnology and Bioengineering eligibility

A combined programme may accept PCM, PCB or PCMB. Some institutions specify Biology or Mathematics, while others require a broader combination.

Students should use the exact current prospectus.

Integrated BTech–MTech eligibility

Eligibility generally follows the undergraduate programme. Students should also verify:

  • Total duration
  • Exit options
  • Degree awarded
  • Minimum performance for continuing
  • Specialisation options
  • Dissertation requirements
  • Total fee

Lateral-entry eligibility

Selected institutions offer lateral entry to eligible diploma holders.

Typical requirements include:

  • A recognised engineering or technology diploma
  • A relevant diploma branch
  • The prescribed aggregate marks
  • Selection through diploma merit or an institutional process
  • Availability of lateral-entry seats

The programme may last three years after lateral admission.

MTech Bioengineering eligibility

An MTech Bioengineering programme may accept BE or BTech graduates from:

  • Bioengineering
  • Biotechnology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Biochemical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics Engineering
  • Instrumentation
  • Computer Science
  • Materials Engineering
  • Another relevant branch specified by the institution

Some programmes may also accept:

  • MSc graduates in relevant sciences
  • Four-year BPharm graduates
  • MBBS graduates
  • BDS graduates
  • Other approved medical or allied qualifications

A minimum of approximately 55% to 60% or a specified CGPA may be required.

MSc Biosciences and Bioengineering eligibility

An MSc programme may accept bachelor’s degrees in:

  • Biology
  • Biotechnology
  • Agriculture
  • Life Sciences
  • Biochemistry
  • Microbiology
  • Another discipline containing relevant Biology subjects

Admission may use JAM, CUET PG or a university selection procedure.

PhD eligibility

Doctoral admission commonly requires:

  • A relevant postgraduate qualification
  • The minimum marks or CGPA prescribed by the university
  • An entrance examination or accepted national test
  • Research interview
  • Suitable research interest
  • Availability of a supervisor

International-student eligibility

International applicants may require:

  • An equivalent school or university qualification
  • Academic transcripts
  • English-language proficiency
  • Passport
  • Student visa
  • Equivalence documentation
  • Financial records
  • Medical documentation where required
