Food Technology Course Duration

The regular BTech or BE Food Technology programme lasts four years and is divided into eight semesters. Diploma study generally lasts three years, while MTech normally lasts two years.

Duration table

First year

Students usually study Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, biology, computing, engineering fundamentals and communication. Some institutions introduce food science and processing in the first year.

Second year

Material balances, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, mechanical operations and laboratory courses establish the food-technology core.

Third year

Students study heat transfer, mass transfer, reaction engineering, process control, equipment and safety. Industrial training may occur during the summer.

Fourth year

Food-plant design, economics, process simulation, electives and the final-year project integrate learning. Students may specialise in dairy, cereals, fruits and vegetables, beverages, packaging, food safety or product development.

Internship duration

Training can range from a few weeks to a full semester. Meaningful internships include defined process, laboratory, design, safety or data work with supervision.

Project duration

Major projects commonly run for one or two semesters. Students define a problem, review literature, build a method, analyse results and defend conclusions.

Academic completion

Backlogs, approved breaks or incomplete projects can extend the duration. Attendance, safety and laboratory rules apply. Lateral-entry students may need bridge courses.
