Check Class 12 subjects, Mathematics, marks, diploma routes, postgraduate prerequisites and programme-specific entry rules.
Product Design Eligibility
Eligibility depends on programme level, institution, state and admission year. Candidates must verify the required Class 12 subjects, minimum marks, entrance examination and counselling category. Course application: human-centred product development.
Diploma eligibility
Diploma and vocational design programmes use institute-specific Class 10, Class 12 or equivalent requirements. Applicants should verify recognition, duration, portfolio expectations and whether the course leads to a degree pathway.
Undergraduate eligibility
For BDes Product Design, many institutions accept Class 12 from Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities, or an approved 10+3 diploma. A minimum around 50 per cent is common in listed examples, with applicable relaxation, but NID and other institutes also publish age or qualification conditions.
Lateral-entry eligibility
Direct second-year entry is not a universal BDes route. Diploma holders should check whether they are admitted to first year or whether an institution has a specific credit-transfer policy.
MDes eligibility
MDes programmes accept qualifications stated by the institute. Depending on the college, eligible backgrounds may include Design, Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design, Fine Arts or another recognised degree or professional diploma. A minimum around 50–60 per cent may apply, with relaxation according to policy.
Some leading programmes require a four-year degree or diploma. CEED, NID DAT, an institutional design test, portfolio, studio exercise and interview may form part of selection.
Portfolio eligibility
A portfolio may not be a formal eligibility condition at every institute, but it is commonly used during selection. It should show observation, process, sketches, experiments, prototypes, testing and reflection—not only polished final images.
PhD eligibility
PhD applicants usually need an eligible master’s qualification with the required marks or CGPA. Selection may include a national score, written test, interview, academic record and research proposal. Direct PhD pathways may exist under institute rules. Course application: human-centred product development.
Mathematics preparation
Basic geometry, proportion, measurement and quantitative reasoning are useful. Most BDes programmes do not require advanced engineering Mathematics at admission, although technical products may later need calculations.
Programming preparation
Digital drawing, presentation and CAD skills are useful, but beginners are not expected to know every tool. Observation, sketching, making and willingness to learn matter more than software certificates.
Documents commonly required
- Class 10 and Class 12 records;
- entrance scorecard and admit card;
- BE/BTech semester marksheets and degree certificate for postgraduate admission;
- transfer and migration certificates;
- identity proof and photographs;
- domicile, category, income or disability certificates where applicable;
- counselling allotment and fee receipt;
- experience and sponsorship documents for sponsored categories. Course application: human-centred product development.
Eligibility mistakes to avoid
Do not assume that every BDes accepts all streams, that UCEED is accepted everywhere or that one portfolio format suits every institute. Check age, marks, diploma equivalence, exam, portfolio and interview rules.
