What is Product Design?

Is Product Design an engineering branch?
Product Design in this context is mainly a design discipline, commonly offered through BDes and MDes programmes. It collaborates closely with engineering but is different from Industrial Engineering, Production Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
What is the difference between Product Design and Product Design?
The terms overlap. Product Design traditionally emphasises manufactured physical products, while Product Design may also include digital products, services or broader business concerns. The actual curriculum and portfolio matter more than the label.
Can students from any Class 12 stream apply?

What is required for MDes admission?
Institutes may accept BDes, BE, BTech, BArch or other specified degrees, sometimes with minimum marks and a four-year qualification requirement. CEED, a portfolio, studio task and interview may be used. Exact eligibility must be verified institute by institute.
Must I be excellent at drawing?
No, but candidates must be willing to practise visual communication. Product Design uses sketching to think and explain. Observation, proportion, clarity and idea development matter more than decorative artwork alone.
Is a portfolio compulsory?

Is a laptop necessary?
A capable laptop is normally useful for CAD, rendering, documentation and presentations. Students should ask the institute for current specifications before buying because software and laboratory access differ.
Does Product Design involve workshop work?
Yes. Good programmes include model making, material exploration, prototyping and digital fabrication. Students must follow training and safety procedures for hand tools, machines, adhesives and finishing materials.
What fees can students expect?
Total BDes tuition may range from several lakhs at public institutes to ₹20 lakh or more in premium private education. Hostel, mess, laptop, materials, prototyping and exhibition expenses are additional. Current official fees should always be checked.
Which colleges offer Product Design?
Examples include National Institutes of Design, Symbiosis design institutes and other universities with a named Product Design programme. IDC School of Design at IIT Bombay offers a postgraduate Product Design route. Availability can change.
What jobs are available after graduation?
Graduates may work as product designers, physical-product designers, design researchers, furniture designers, CAD or surface modellers, prototype developers, packaging designers or junior consultants. Specialised mobility and CMF roles require suitable portfolios.
Can graduates work in UX design?
Yes, if they develop interaction research and interface skills. Product Design can be especially relevant to physical-digital products, but applicants for purely digital UX roles need projects demonstrating digital flows, prototyping and usability.
Can graduates work in automobile companies?
Yes, but transportation design is highly specialised and competitive. Candidates usually need mobility-focused sketches, form development, surfacing and projects rather than a general portfolio alone.
Can graduates work in manufacturing?
Yes. Designers collaborate with manufacturing teams on materials, processes, assembly, finishes, cost and quality. Production-engineering responsibility may still require an appropriate engineering background.
Can a fresher become a design manager?
Normally no. Freshers usually enter junior design, research, CAD or prototyping roles. Management and design-lead positions require proven projects, judgement, stakeholder coordination and team responsibility developed over time.
Is Product Design difficult?
It can be demanding because open-ended projects require repeated research, making, criticism and revision. Students must manage studio deadlines and accept that the first concept is rarely the final solution. Curiosity and consistent practice make the course manageable.
