Reading a closing rank properly

A closing rank describes an allotment outcome for a particular institution, branch, category, seat type and round. Remove any of those labels and the number can become misleading. A general-category first-round figure should not be compared casually with a reserved-category mop-up figure. They may represent different pools and different vacancies, even if the college and branch names are identical.

The direction of rank also matters: a smaller numerical rank commonly represents a higher merit position, whereas a higher score is usually better. Confusing the two can reverse a comparison. Before drawing a conclusion from a table, read its headings and establish which rank list it uses. UGEAC and BCECE figures should not be merged into one unexplained column as though they came from the same merit scale.

Historical closing ranks can help describe competitiveness but cannot guarantee a future seat. The available vacancies and the choices of other candidates change between rounds. A preference list should therefore contain genuinely acceptable options in the intended order. Adding a course that the student would refuse to join does not create a useful safety option; it creates the possibility of an unwanted allotment.
