Chemical Science and Technology Course Duration

The BTech Chemical Science and Technology programme lasts four years and is divided into eight semesters. Students complete theory, laboratories, computational work, electives and a major project.

Duration table

ProgrammeTypical duration
BTech Chemical Science and TechnologyFour years
MSc in a related chemical disciplineUsually two years after graduation
MTech or MSUsually two years, depending on programme
Integrated master's in Chemical SciencesCommonly five years, subject to the university structure
PhDCommonly three to six years or more

First year

Students usually study Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, computing, engineering drawing, mechanics, electronics and laboratory courses. This common foundation helps them work across disciplines.

Second year

The curriculum moves into organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, quantum concepts, process calculations, fluid mechanics, spectroscopy and computational methods.

Third year

Students study kinetics, electrochemistry, environmental chemistry, materials, synthesis, instrumentation and applied chemical technology. Electives allow specialisation.

Fourth year

Advanced electives, seminar and a major research project dominate the final year. Students may work with chemistry, materials, biology, energy or computation research groups.

Laboratory progression

Early laboratories teach measurement, synthesis and analysis. Later courses introduce instruments, advanced experiments and independent research. Safety and documentation expectations increase.

Research project duration

The major project may span one or two semesters. Students review literature, define objectives, conduct experiments or calculations, analyse results and present a dissertation.

Academic completion

Backlogs or incomplete project requirements can extend study. Attendance and laboratory safety rules apply. Students should plan projects early because scientific experiments can require repeated trials.
