Regular B.Tech eligibility

For the regular B.Tech programmes listed in the prospectus's general engineering section, candidates need an accepted Class 12 or equivalent qualification with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The standard marks conditions are at least 50% in Mathematics separately and at least 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics combined. Both tests must be satisfied; a strong combined percentage does not remove the separate Mathematics condition.

The prospectus permits Kerala Scheduled Caste and Kerala Scheduled Tribe applicants to apply with minimum pass marks in the qualifying examination under the stated provisions. Kerala SEBC candidates belonging to the non-creamy-layer category receive the specified five-percentage-point relaxation. These are category- and state-linked rules; they should not be described as an automatic reduction for every candidate holding any reserved-category certificate anywhere in India.

Consider a general-category example with Mathematics at 48%, Physics at 75% and Chemistry at 75%, all with equal maximum marks. The combined percentage is 66%, but the separate Mathematics condition is not met. Conversely, Mathematics at 70% with the other two at 35% each gives a combined percentage below 50%. This illustrates why the two calculations must be checked independently.

Calculating the qualifying aggregate correctly

Use marks from the subjects and components required by the prospectus and the accepted marksheet. Where subjects have different maximum marks, calculate the combined percentage from total marks obtained divided by total maximum marks. An unweighted average of three percentages can differ from the required aggregate if their denominators differ.

For example, marks of 120 out of 200 in Mathematics, 70 out of 100 in Physics and 65 out of 100 in Chemistry produce a combined percentage of 255 out of 400, or 63.75%. Averaging 60%, 70% and 65% gives 65%, which is not the same calculation. The example is arithmetic guidance; the university determines which board components and marksheets it accepts.

Improvement, supplementary or equivalent qualifications require particular care. Check which certificate establishes the final qualifying status and whether it can be produced within the admission deadline. A CAT rank does not convert an unaccepted qualification into an accepted one. If the board's marking structure is unusual, obtain an official interpretation using the actual subject record rather than trying several formulas until one appears favourable.

Naval Architecture, Polymer and Instrumentation

Naval Architecture and Ship Building has its own eligibility entry. In addition to the stated PCM and Mathematics conditions, the prospectus specifies a first-class qualifying examination result of 60%, subject to the listed category provisions. Applicants should not transfer the general B.Tech 50% summary to this programme without reading its separate row.

Polymer Science and Engineering has a distinct departmental programme entry, while Instrumentation and Control Engineering has its own academic and physical-fitness wording. These programmes share important engineering foundations but are not interchangeable with a generic branch list. Their eligibility, seat categories and fee entries should be checked individually when options are registered.

The distinction between a department and the School of Engineering can also affect how a course appears in the admissions system. Write the full programme title in the preference worksheet, along with its teaching unit and campus. This reduces the risk of selecting a similarly named course or assuming that a fee example from another unit applies to it.

Marine Engineering is a separate entrance route

The 2026 prospectus states that B.Tech Marine Engineering at Kunjali Marakkar School of Marine Engineering uses the Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test rank. Applicants must take the relevant IMU CET and upload its rank certificate through the CUSAT process. A Test Code 101 score alone should not be described as the entrance basis for this programme.

The prospectus gives Marine Engineering additional qualifying requirements: a PCM average of at least 60%, Mathematics of at least 50%, and English of at least 50% at the specified school level. It also states an age limit, passport requirement and prescribed medical-fitness certification. These conditions require direct programme-level verification; the ordinary engineering summary is insufficient.

A candidate interested in maritime work should resolve the entrance and fitness requirements before treating a provisional enquiry as a viable admission plan. Medical suitability must be assessed through the prescribed qualified process, not inferred from this article or from a student's ordinary daily health. The guide identifies that the requirement exists; it does not determine whether an individual satisfies it.

Lateral entry and part-time engineering

B.Tech lateral entry is a separate route to the third semester. The prospectus's Test Code 102 contains 200 objective questions over three hours, covering English, Mathematics, Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Graphics and General Engineering. Its distribution is 20, 50, 40, 40 and 50 questions respectively, with +4/−1 scoring. A diploma applicant should not prepare only for the regular PCM paper and assume the same test applies.

The accepted qualification and branch conditions must also be checked for lateral entry. The prospectus contains specific diploma requirements and recognised exceptions, so “any diploma” is an inadequate eligibility statement. A candidate needs to connect the diploma discipline to the intended B.Tech option and verify any marks or qualification conditions before registering.

Part-time B.Tech programmes are separately listed and should not be merged with regular or lateral-entry rules. Their intended applicant profile, admission conditions and fee treatment can differ. The existence of several engineering routes makes exact course naming especially important when requesting guidance, because a correct answer for one route can be wrong for another.
