Interpreting previous cutoffs responsibly

A previous closing rank describes an observed outcome in a particular programme, category and round. It is not a permanent admission threshold. The outcome can change with seat availability, applicant preferences and the number of candidates participating. Use a historical cutoff to understand competition, while preserving uncertainty about a different cycle or round.

Compare like with like. A closing value for a reserved category cannot be treated as the open-category value. A last-round vacancy result may not represent the first-round position. A percentile should not be compared directly with a rank merely because both are numbers associated with admission.

A balanced preference list can include ambitious choices, plausible choices and acceptable alternatives. The categories are planning tools, not official predictions. Every listed option should still be one the applicant would seriously consider. Adding an unwanted programme merely to obtain any allotment can create a difficult decision when payment and reporting deadlines arrive.

Avoid claims that a particular score guarantees a college unless the authority has issued an actual allotment to that candidate. Even a strong historical pattern remains conditional. The reliable endpoint is the current official offer and successful completion of its requirements.
