Building a syllabus map from undergraduate learning

Start with the official syllabus for the chosen discipline and turn each topic into a testable action. Instead of recording that matrices are complete, write that you can determine rank, solve a consistent linear system and identify eigenvalues in a simple case. Actions reveal whether revision has produced usable knowledge or only familiarity with chapter names.

For discipline topics, connect the syllabus to undergraduate courses, laboratory work and numerical methods already studied. A topic may have been covered under a different course title. Conversely, a familiar course name may contain material outside the entrance scope. The mapping should therefore operate at the concept level rather than treating an entire textbook as compulsory.

Use three working categories: concepts that can be explained and applied without help, concepts that need a brief reminder, and concepts that cannot yet be used. These categories lead to different tasks. The first group needs timed questions, the second needs concise retrieval practice, and the third needs a worked explanation followed by independent problems.

Revisit the map after each mixed test. If a supposedly strong topic produces repeated errors, move it back into active revision. A preparation record should describe present performance rather than preserve an optimistic label assigned weeks earlier. The most useful map changes as evidence accumulates.
