Normalisation, percentile and university merit

For subjects conducted across multiple shifts, NTA's bulletin describes conversion of raw marks through its specified score-compilation procedure. The appendix uses percentile and equi-percentile methods. Normalisation should therefore not be described as an arbitrary fixed addition or subtraction for every student in a shift.

A percentage of marks and a percentile are different measures. A percentage compares a candidate's marks with the maximum; a percentile describes relative performance within the relevant distribution. A candidate with 80% of raw marks does not automatically have an 80th percentile. The relationship depends on how other candidates performed.

University merit is a further stage. An institution may combine specified subject scores, apply eligibility conditions and resolve ties under its own rules. Adding every number on the scorecard can create a total that the programme never uses. Before comparing two applicants, establish that the same papers, score type and merit formula are being compared.

Downloading and reading the scorecard

The result announced on 23 June 2026 is the examination outcome for the 2026–27 admission cycle. Use the official result route and retain the scorecard in a readable file. Check the candidate identity, application number and the subjects actually reported. A paper that was not selected or not taken cannot be assumed to have a usable score simply because it is relevant to the desired degree.

The scorecard is an input to admission, not an allotment letter. It does not identify a guaranteed university, branch, hostel or scholarship. A candidate who has downloaded it still needs to complete the admission process required by each chosen institution. This is particularly important when several institutions use the same national examination but operate separate registration systems.

If the identity information appears inconsistent, distinguish a data correction issue from a request to change the marks. Report the exact inconsistency using the official helpdesk and preserve the supporting record. The absence of a rechecking process does not mean the candidate should ignore an apparent identity mismatch, but the two issues should not be described as though they are the same request.
