Using the syllabus as a diagnostic

Postgraduate entrance preparation is most effective when it starts from the candidate's actual undergraduate knowledge. Read the relevant syllabus and mark topics that can be solved independently, topics remembered only at a descriptive level and topics that were never studied. Those groups need different treatment. A familiar chapter heading is not evidence that its numerical methods remain accessible after several semesters.

Use a short diagnostic set for each major area before committing to a long revision schedule. If a student can explain operating-system terminology but cannot trace a scheduling example, practice should focus on applying the concepts. If the student cannot distinguish the terms, an explanation is needed first. The diagnosis prevents hours being spent rereading material that was already secure.

The examples below are original teaching illustrations, not official past questions or forecasts of chapter weightage. They develop representative mathematical and engineering reasoning relevant to postgraduate preparation. Candidates should use only the discipline sections that match their required test. Reading every branch's content is not a substitute for depth in the chosen syllabus.
