CG PET 2026 Exam Pattern

Questions, marks and the duration discrepancy

The reviewed CG PET pattern has 150 multiple-choice questions, divided equally among Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Each correct answer earns one mark, and there is no negative marking for an incorrect answer. The examination is conducted offline using a response sheet. All three subjects therefore contribute equally to the maximum score of 150.

Duration information in the permitted coverage is inconsistent: the detailed 2026 overview gives 195 minutes, while another pattern table gives three hours. This article preserves that discrepancy rather than inventing an explanation for the extra fifteen minutes. Candidates must use the session and working-time instructions on the official admit card and question booklet. The difference should not be assumed to represent extra solving time.

For practice, a three-hour simulation is a conservative way to develop speed, with any additional time treated as a separate scenario until official instructions settle it. This is a study recommendation, not a declaration of the examination's authoritative duration. Students should be able to distinguish a useful training target from an officially prescribed rule.

What no negative marking changes

With no deduction for a wrong answer, leaving a valid single-answer question blank normally gives up a possible mark without protecting an existing score. That does not mean random marking should replace solving. The best order is to secure questions that can be answered, return to those that need work, and then use the remaining time to make informed selections on unresolved items.

Time remains scarce even when wrong answers have no penalty. Spending ten minutes on one difficult Mathematics question can prevent several straightforward Chemistry questions from being attempted. The absence of negative marking changes the final response decision; it does not remove the need to allocate effort sensibly.

In an original mock example, a student answers 39 Physics, 34 Chemistry and 42 Mathematics questions correctly. The score is 115 out of 150, irrespective of how many of the remaining valid responses were wrong or blank under the stated scheme. Reviewing only the total would hide the fact that Chemistry offers the largest immediate improvement opportunity.

Track errors by cause as well as subject. A wrong answer caused by an unfamiliar concept needs teaching and practice. A wrong answer caused by misreading a unit needs a checking habit. A wrong answer caused by marking the adjacent OMR row needs response-sheet practice. Treating all three as weak knowledge leads to ineffective revision.
