Reading a seat matrix

A seat matrix describes seats by institution, programme and the categories used in that process. It is not simply a list of college names. Before adding a choice, identify the programme code and the relevant category row. Similar branch titles can appear under different codes or institutions, and a wrong code can create an unintended preference.

Distinguish total intake from seats currently available in a particular round. Intake is the overall authorised programme size under the relevant information, while a vacancy matrix reflects a stage-specific availability position. A programme can have a large intake but few remaining seats, or a smaller intake with several vacancies at a later stage.

The date of the matrix matters. Admissions, withdrawals and round transitions can change availability. Use the version associated with the current stage rather than a screenshot shared earlier. Retain the official file with its date so that the basis for a preference decision is clear.

A zero in one category does not establish that the programme has no seats under every route, but it also does not justify assuming that another category's seats are available to the applicant. Category conversion, if permitted, follows the authority's rules. Students should not invent their own conversion expectation when planning an allotment.

Comparing colleges without relying on slogans

An institution's facilities should be evaluated in relation to the intended branch. Mechanical engineering needs appropriate workshop and laboratory access; electronics needs relevant experimental facilities; computing needs usable systems and a sound curriculum. A photograph of a modern building does not answer these academic questions.

Ask how practical work is conducted. Are students able to use equipment themselves, how large are laboratory groups, and what kinds of projects are assessed? These questions turn a broad claim of good infrastructure into information about the learning experience. Where possible, compare the answers with official department material rather than relying on a single informal account.

Placement information needs a defined cohort and period. A highest package is one observation, not the typical outcome for every student. Look for branch relevance, the number of participating or placed students and the nature of roles, where verified data are available. Avoid converting an exceptional figure into a guaranteed return on tuition.

Location can affect access to internships and travel, but it also affects daily cost and time. A college closer to home may reduce living expenses, while another may offer a preferred programme that justifies relocation. The decision should consider the student's circumstances rather than assume that one type of location is always better.
