Reading the syllabus as a sequence of skills
The brochure contains the detailed Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry syllabus. Its scope should be checked directly, because a board textbook's current contents or another entrance examination's reduced syllabus may not be identical. The preparation discussion below explains ways to study the listed subject areas; it does not assign official chapter weightages or claim that a particular chapter is guaranteed to appear.
Use three levels when recording progress. At the first level, a student recognises a definition or formula. At the second, the student can apply it to a familiar problem. At the third, the student can select it from among several possibilities in a mixed set. A chapter should not be called complete merely because its notes have been read. A short unfamiliar application is a better check of whether the knowledge can be used in the examination.
Dependencies make study order important. Algebra supports functions, coordinate geometry and calculus. Vector components support several areas of mechanics and electricity. Mole calculations and concentration support solutions, equilibrium and other Chemistry numericals. Repairing an underlying skill can improve performance in several chapters at once, whereas repeatedly attempting advanced questions may leave the same hidden weakness untouched.
The most useful syllabus sheet therefore records more than chapter names. For each unit, note a prerequisite, a representative question type and the last mistake made. “Calculus incomplete” is too broad to guide an evening's work. “Cannot apply the chain rule when the inner expression is a quotient” identifies a small skill that can be taught, practised and checked again within a manageable session.
